Not only does mouth breathing lead to crooked teeth, it can also increase the risk of tooth decay as well as make you more susceptible to illness. This is because if you breathe through your mouth, you are bypassing your body’s natural filtration system. The risk of tooth decay arises because breathing through your mouth dries out your teeth. This makes it harder for saliva to fight off bacteria that slowly demineralises the tooth surface.

Breathing through the nose is how you are supposed to breathe. When you breathe through your nose, your body filters the air before it gets to your lungs and your tongue rests on the roof of your mouth. This is important because having your tongue resting in the roof of the mouth plays a part in having the correct jaw size. With the correct jaw size there is less chance of needing to have teeth extracted.

The Relation of Mouth Breathing to Sleep Apnoea

The reason mouth breathing can cause sleep apnoea is because of what mouth breathing does to your jaw. When you breathe through your nose, your tongue is on the roof of your mouth keeping your jaw forward. When you breathe through your mouth, the tongue is not resting in the roof of your mouth exerting pressure, so the jaw moves back.

When you sleep, because of where the jaw is now positioned, it can block off the airway making it hard to breathe and resulting in sleep apnoea.
