Professionals’ Courses by Dr John Flutter

Straight teeth don’t grow by accident!

For children to grow up with straight teeth they need the following:

  • Lips together at rest
  • The tongue resting in the roof of the mouth
  • Breathing through the nose
  • No lip or cheek movement on the subconscious swallow

In order to help achieve these patterns Dr John Flutter provides a series of courses to train dentists and their staff to acquire the necessary skills.  All courses are hands-on and include live training sessions (including chair-side adjustments) with real patients!  This is ideal for the practitioner seeking a more practical approach to learning.

Courses run regularly at our Brisbane practice include:

  • Myobrace Therapy (One Day)
  • Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (One Day)
  • Biobloc Stage 1 Appliance (Two Days)
  • The Farrell Bent Wire System (Two Days)
  • Postural Correction & Breathing Retraining (Two Days)

Course outlines

Here are the professional courses as explained by Dr Flutter:

Myobrace Therapy (one day)

This course acts as a  pre-requisite to all other courses offered at John Flutter Dental & is run back to back with our “Diagnosis & Treatment Planning” course held the following day.

You will acquire an understanding of the impact of soft tissue on dental & craniofacial development as well as the relationship between breathing & malocclusion.

Learn to perform Myobrace Analysis, identify oral habits & provide parent/patient education.  Comprehensive explanation of how each Myofunctional appliance works.

The course will include 3 hours of Practical training sessions with patients to prescribe & fit appliances, deliver Myobrace exercises & measure progress.

We will look at the necessary programmes I have in place to ensure successful patient compliance & make it all work.

Attend Day 1 as a stand alone Myobrace Therapy course or continue to Day 2 on Diagnosis & Treatment Planning.  This course is suitable for Dentists, Orthodontists, Therapists, Assistants & other members of staff.

Diagnosis & Treatment Planning (one day)

You must have the core foundations from Day 1 ‘Myobrace Therapy’ course prior to attending this course. This course will always be held the following day after a Myofunctional course.

This course will focus primarily on assessment, diagnosis & treatment planning.  You will learn to recognize treatment categories, establish a consultation process & gather records for analysis.

We will discuss & diagnose various case studies as practice before conducting live examinations with patients over a 3 hour practical training session. We will then compare records & prepare treatment plans for each case.

An added bonus is that each attendee will receive a USB stick with a template excel sheet that has been specifically designed for conducting examinations.  The information collected from each field is then automatically transferred into another document that can be used in your own practice as an official Diagnosis & Treatment plan.

This course is suitable for Dentists, Orthodontists, Therapists or even assistants that will be aiding the practitioner with the examination.

Biobloc Stage 1 Appliance (two days)

The Biobloc Stage 1 is used to increase the size of the upper arch to make room for the tongue to rest in the roof of the mouth in the minimum time.

The appliance was developed by Dr John Mew and uses Crozat cribs to hold the appliance in place. This special cribbing is needed to hold the plate in place 24 hours a day to allow for ‘semi-rapid’ expansion -approximately 1mm of arch expansion a week, a rate that will neither tip buccal teeth nor damage the midline suture.

I have been using these appliances for over 25 years with a great deal of success but they do require practice in adjusting the appliances in order to obtain the maximum benefit.

On the first day we will spend the morning adjusting Biobloc appliances before observing my Biobloc patients in care. There are several adjustments to make each month and we will practice them all. We will have a session on trouble shooting and also appliance design.

This course is hands-on and during the second day you will have the opportunity to see my Biobloc patients and do the adjustments yourself.

By the end of the course you will be able to design a Biobloc stage 1 appliance for primary, mixed and permanent dentition. You will be able to adjust the appliance throughout its use and be able to identify those cases that need this appliance. You will also be able to identify and rectify the occasional problems that arise.

The course will be for dentists, therapists and orthodontists only. This is a small class with limited bookings available. This is an essential skill for those dentists who want to go on to use Dr Mew’s stage 3 appliance.

Bent Wire System (two days)

The bent wire appliance is used to develop the size of the upper or lower arch while at the same time allowing room for the tongue to rest and function in the palate. I use it in the late mixed and permanent dentition to develop the arches used in combination with a Trainer to correct moderate malocclusions.

This is a hands-on wire bending course. Once the wire bending skills have been mastered you will have the opportunity to see my Bent Wire patients and be able to adjust the appliances. We will have a session on trouble shooting as well as appliance design.

The course will be for dentists, therapists and orthodontists only. Limited bookings available per class.
This is an essential skill for those dentists who want to provide myofunctional orthodontics in conjunction with Trainers from the Myofunctional Research Company.

Postural Correction and Breathing Retraining (two days)

The purpose of this course is to train the dentists, orthodontists & their staff on how to help their patients establish nasal breathing.

I have been working with breathing correction for about 15 years and have now developed a programme that we deliver to children in groups to help them learn to breathe through the nose.

This course is hands-on, combining both the background physiology, biochemistry and the clinical application. Once the techniques have been learned you will be able to practice your skills on my patients.

This course will prepare your team to deliver the programme to patients. Much of the delivery can be done by a trained assistant so we highly recommend and encourage assistants to attend this course.

This is an essential skill for those dentists who want to help children to establish nasal breathing to maintain stability after orthodontic treatment.

Upcoming courses

Myobrace Therapy

16 - 18 February 2018

Myobrace Therapy, Diagnosis, Treatment Planning

The Myobrace Therapy course allows Dentists to acquire an understanding of the influence of the soft tissues and breathing on craniofacial development and the occlusion. Dentists learn to identify and treat poor oral habits and provide patient education. During the practical sessions with patients the Dentists will prescribe and fit Myobrace appliances, deliver exercises and measure progress.

Arch Expansion

23 - 25 February 2018

The Farrell Bent Wire System

The Farrell Bent Wire appliance is used to develop the size of the upper or lower arch while allowing room for the tongue to rest & function in the palate. Dr Flutter uses this appliance in the late mixed and early permanent dentition in conjunction with the Myobrace. This is a hands‐on wire bending course and once the wire bending skills have been mastered, Dentists will have the opportunity to adjust and fit the appliances on patients under Dr Flutter’s guidance.

Arch Expansion with Biobloc Stage 1

The Biobloc stage 1 is used to increase the size of the upper arch to make room for the tongue to rest in the roof of the mouth in the minimum time with minimum trauma. The appliance was developed by Dr John Mew & has been used by Dr Flutter successfully for over 30 years. Skills can be learned to adjust the appliance to obtain the maximum benefit from these appliances. By the end of the course Dentists will be able to design and adjust a Biobloc stage 1 for the primary, and mixed dentition. Practical sessions involve adjusting appliances under Dr Flutter’s guidance.

Postural Correction & Breathing Retraining

Expression of interest for a mid/late 2018

Breathing Retraining

The purpose of the Postural Correction and Breathing Retraining course is to train the Dentist & staff to help their patients establish nasal breathing. Dr Flutter has been working with breathing correction for over 17 years and has developed a programme that he delivers to children in groups to help them learn to breathe through the nose. This course combines physiology, biochemistry and the clinical application of the programme. Practical training involves working with groups of children to assess and monitor their breathing using Biofeedback technology and learning breathing exercises.
